A recent article by Channel Marketer Report highlighted how employers are increasingly looking for channel-specific formal training in new hires.
The trend reflects the growing importance of the channel profession, with employers demanding more highly skilled channel staff for their teams. Gone are the days when a good sales person would get the job. Employers now want to see a commitment to the channel as a profession, reflected in the attainment of certified training from accredited third parties.
Michelle Chiantera, Cisco’s VP of Global Partner and Commercial Marketing agrees: “I think that is fundamentally a challenge because people are coming out of universities without a foundational understanding of what an indirect selling model looks like.”
Similarly, Gavin O'Shea, Director at channel professionals recruitment company Channel People confirms: “There is no doubt that if we put forward two candidates for a channel vacancy with the same experience, the candidate who has a specific certification in channel business will always get the job. Things like internal training by employers or generic sales and marketing certification are no longer enough. Employers want to see commitment to the channel as a profession, and that means certification through things like the Certificate in Channel Management or the Certificate in Channel Marketing. These are increasingly must-haves for people looking to progress their channel career.” The Channel Institute provides certified channel training that has been reviewed and approved by an Industry Advisory Council (learn more) comprised of channel visionaries like Michelle. The Council ensures that the syllabus for our certificate courses meets industry best practices and their requirements as employers. They know that a channel professional who has been certified by the Channel Institute has achieved a specific knowledge level by passing the relevant exam.
